Authorities shut down 17 travel and air cargo companies in crackdown

There are any number of reasons a travel agency can have its operating license revoked by authorities.

At the start of 2026, two companies in the Canadian province of British Columbia that presented themselves as travel agencies ended up getting shut down by regulators after multiple complaints of customers paying for flight tickets and hotels that ended up being invalid.

In Thailand, regulators recently revoked the licenses of four travel agencies after discovering that they were operated by Western tourists with no right to run a business in the country through local “Thai nominees” that they registered on their behalf.

And now, regulators in the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar have become the latest to close down 17 agencies selling air travel and air cargo transportation services as part of a wider compliance crackdown on its aviation industry.

While Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) did not name the specific agencies closed, the government agency said that the latest round of inspections found a number of regulation violations in agencies that ended up getting them shut down.

One of the primary requirements of travel agencies selling airline tickets, in particular, is to ensure that it is working with legitimate providers and have the required licenses to operate. Several of those shut down are reported to be international agencies operating in Qatar.

QCAA, in a statement translated from Arabic, also said that the shutdowns were part of continued enforcement of its aviation industry rather than a one-time action over specific wrongdoing.

Qatar Airways is the flag carrier for the Middle Eastern nation.

What is happening with Middle Eastern airspace in June 2026

Amid the security situation in the Middle East set off by the U.S. attack on Iran in February 2026, Qatar has tightened control of its airspace following several Iranian attacks on its infrastructure and a total airspace shutdown throughout early March.

MixxTravel: The Malmö-based travel company was forced to cancel trips and wind down operations after being declared bankrupt by a judge in August 2025.
Tango Travel: The Icelandic tour operator went bust in November 2025 after major partner Play Airlines filed for bankruptcy and stopped operations a month earlier as many of the packages it sold included tickets from the defunct airline.
New Era Travel: Ceasing operations in November 2025, the Hampshire-based tour operator took British travelers to Spain, Australia, and Las Vegas, among other destinations.
